Cambodia
Astonishingly well, even though the wounds can be seen only at the second or third sight. Cambodia went to hell and back, it is estimated that 20-40 % of the population died between 1975-1979 and one sign is the almost complete absence of old people. And when you pay the occasional old rikshaw-driver you wonder whether he was a victim or or murderer. Yet, Pnohm Penh is a lively city with beautiful features. But the shadows of the past creep up ever now and then: an underlying fear and mistrust when dealing with people or the absence of the corrective influence of the older generation which was almost entirely wiped out.
How does a country, an individual, a culture survive a genocide?
